Although water is needed in the hydration reaction of cement (q.v.), excess water added for workability of the concrete and mortar creates voids that decrease strength and increase water permeability. Plasticizers are used in cements to cut water demand by 2-4% and decrease void volume. More recently, dispersant so-called superplaticizers have been formulated being consumed which can reduce water demand by about 15-20% and more as per the application. This results in much higher early strength and less water permeability in the concrete. Super plasticizers function by absorbing on the surface of alite moles of Tricalcium Silicate, principal constituent of Portland cement. This absorption increased the charge repulsion of the particles allowing less water to be used while maintaining low slurry viscosity i.e. (increased workability). Reportedly, super plasticizers retard the hydration of alite by limiting its interaction with water molecules and minimizing the dissolution of calcium ions that normally further react as the cement cures.


The two main classes of super plasticizers are Melamine-Formaldehyde condensates & Naphthalene Sulfonate condensates. Newer Superplaticizer “DISPERSWELL-CM” derived from Neutralize Carboxylic Acid based polymer requires lower dosage for earlier type available product. “DISPERSWELL-CM” is an aqueous solution of chemical dispersants with remarkable dispersing and fluidifying action giving optimum dispersion of the cement particles. The dispersing action produces a dramatic increase in workability, suicient to achieve a free -flowing properties, improves water tightness reduces shrinkage; increase compressive strength due to reduced water cement ratio.

Surface Preparation

For better adhesion, it is essential to clean the surface on which the material is to be consumed. To remove dust, dirt or loose particles by emery paper, wire brush or blower. To get optimum performance the surface must be dry, free from oil grease. For concrete surface, old concrete surface should be examined for structural soundness. Unsound areas must be repaired and should be cured for required time.


Precaution

Mix only the required quantity of material, which can be utilized within stipulated pot- life to avoid solidification. Wash all the tools and tackles with industrial solvent immediately after the application is completed.
